Turn off the pool pump and power
Close any valves if needed
Release pressure from the filter
Remove the filter housing or lid
Take out the filter element, cartridge, grids, or sand top as applicable
Rinse cartridge filters with a hose from top to bottom
Soak cartridge filters in filter cleaner if heavily soiled
Rinse thoroughly after soaking
For DE filters, hose off the grids carefully
For sand filters, backwash until the water runs clear
Add fresh DE powder to DE filters after cleaning
Reassemble the filter
Check and replace damaged O-rings, cartridges, grids, or laterals if needed
Restart the pump
Verify normal pressure and water flow
Clean the filter on a regular schedule
