How To Clean A Washing Machine?

Unplug the washing machine or turn off power

Set the machine to the hottest water setting

Remove and clean the detergent drawer and fabric softener compartment

Soak the drawer in hot water with a mild detergent, then scrub and rinse

Wipe the drawer housing area with a damp cloth

Pour washing machine cleaner or 2–4 cups (480–960 ml) of white vinegar into the detergent dispenser (or drum if recommended by the product)

Run an empty hot cycle

If using bleach: add 1 cup (240 ml) to the drum (or follow product guidance), then run an empty hot cycle

Do not mix vinegar and bleach in the same cleaning cycle

Wipe down the door seal/gasket (front-load) or inner rim (top-load) with a damp cloth

Remove visible residue, lint, or debris from the gasket folds

Clean the drain pump filter (if accessible) and remove trapped lint or objects

Check and clean the filter housing area, then reinsert the filter securely

Run a short rinse cycle to remove lingering cleaner/vinegar/bleach

Clean the exterior with a damp cloth and dry it

Wipe the drum and leave the lid/door open to dry completely

Clean the lint trap/filter (top-load or any model with a removable filter) as applicable

Wash small items in a mesh bag to reduce buildup

Repeat every 1–3 months or as needed for odor buildup
