Vacuum the carpet thoroughly in multiple directions.
Blot fresh spills immediately with a clean, dry white cloth.
Mix 1 cup white vinegar with 2 cups warm water in a spray bottle.
Lightly spray the vinegar solution onto the stained area.
Blot with a clean cloth until the stain transfers.
Rinse the area by blotting with plain water.
Blot dry with a towel until no more moisture transfers.
For greasy stains, sprinkle baking soda on the area and let sit 30–60 minutes.
Vacuum the baking soda residue.
For stubborn stains, apply a small amount of carpet shampoo or upholstery cleaner according to the label.
Work the cleaner in gently with a soft brush.
Blot, then rinse lightly with water and blot dry.
For odors, sprinkle baking soda over the carpet and leave for several hours or overnight, then vacuum.
Avoid soaking the carpet backing and do not use excessive water.
Test any cleaner on a hidden area first.
Allow the carpet to dry completely before walking on it or replacing furniture.
Use fans or a fan + open windows to speed drying.
