Wash your hands thoroughly
Use a clean, soft, damp gauze pad or washcloth
Wrap the gauze or cloth around your finger
Gently wipe the baby’s tongue
Wipe only lightly; do not scrub
Clean the tongue after feeding if needed
Use plain water only unless a doctor advises otherwise
Stop if the baby becomes upset or uncomfortable
Do not use toothpaste, mouthwash, or harsh cleaners
Contact a pediatrician if you see white patches that do not wipe away, bleeding, swelling, or signs of pain
