Gather: cotton balls or gauze, ear cleanser made for dogs, and treats
Choose a quiet, well-lit space and keep the dog calm
Gently hold the ear flap and wipe only the visible outer ear with cotton or gauze
Pour the recommended amount of dog ear cleanser into the ear canal as directed on the label
Massage the base of the ear gently for 20–30 seconds
Let your dog shake their head, then wipe away loosened debris with cotton or gauze
Use fresh cotton or gauze each time; stop when it comes out clean
Check for irritation (redness, swelling, strong odor, pain, excessive discharge)
Dry the outer ear with a clean, dry cotton or gauze after cleaning
Reward your dog with a treat and praise
Clean only as often as your veterinarian recommends (commonly 1–2 times per week or less)
Never insert cotton swabs or tools deep into the ear canal
Do not use hydrogen peroxide, alcohol, essential oils, or human ear drops unless prescribed
Avoid cleaning if the dog has severe pain, bleeding, or you suspect a ruptured eardrum
Contact a veterinarian if there is persistent odor, discharge, head shaking, scratching, or recurring issues
