Unplug the iron and let it cool completely
Remove the iron and any items from the board
Locate the release lever, latch, or locking mechanism under the board
Hold the board firmly with one hand
Press or lift the release mechanism
Lower the board slowly while guiding the legs inward
Keep fingers clear of the folding joints
Engage the lock if the board has one
Store the closed ironing board upright or in its designated place
