Gather rye bread, corned beef, sauerkraut, Swiss cheese, Russian or Thousand Island dressing, and butter
Drain the sauerkraut well
Butter one side of each bread slice
Place one slice of bread butter-side down in a skillet or on a griddle
Add dressing to the unbuttered side
Layer on Swiss cheese, corned beef, sauerkraut, and more Swiss cheese
Top with the second slice of bread, butter-side up
Cook over medium heat until the bread is golden brown
Flip carefully and cook the other side until golden brown and the cheese is melted
Remove from heat
Slice and serve immediately
