Rinse the broccoli and cut it into florets
Trim and peel the stem if using, then slice it
Fill a pot with 1 to 2 inches of water
Add a pinch of salt if desired
Bring the water to a boil
Add the broccoli to the pot
Cover with a lid
Cook for 3 to 5 minutes until tender-crisp
Check doneness with a fork
Drain the broccoli immediately
Season and serve
