Remove any wilted outer leaves
Rinse the cabbage under cold water
Cut the cabbage into quarters
Remove the core
Slice or shred the cabbage
Heat butter, oil, or other fat in a pan
Add sliced onions if desired
Add the cabbage to the pan
Season with salt and pepper
Add a splash of water, vinegar, or stock
Cover and cook over medium-low heat
Stir occasionally
Cook until tender, about 15 to 30 minutes
Add apple, sugar, or spices if desired
Adjust seasoning before serving
