Preheat the BBQ to medium-high heat, about 400 to 450 F
Trim excess fat from the tri-tip, leaving a thin layer
Season generously with salt, black pepper, garlic powder, and paprika or use your favorite rub
Let the tri-tip sit at room temperature for 20 to 30 minutes
Place the tri-tip on the grill over direct heat
Sear each side for 4 to 6 minutes until browned
Move the tri-tip to indirect heat
Close the lid and cook until the internal temperature reaches 130 to 135 F for medium-rare or 140 to 145 F for medium
Flip once during indirect cooking if needed for even cooking
Remove the tri-tip from the grill when it is 5 degrees below your target temperature
Rest the meat for 10 to 15 minutes
Slice against the grain before serving
Serve with your preferred BBQ sauce or sides
