Say the word out loud
Count each distinct vowel sound
Treat diphthongs as one syllable
Count one syllable for each vowel sound, not each vowel letter
Do not count silent vowels
Watch for silent e at the end of words
Count separate vowel sounds in words with more than one syllable
Use dictionary pronunciation if unsure
Break the word into spoken beats
