Bake and cool the cake completely
Level the cake layers if needed
Place the first layer on a cake board or serving plate
Add a thin layer of frosting between cake layers
Stack the remaining layers
Apply a very thin coat of frosting over the top and sides
Scrape off excess frosting with an offset spatula or bench scraper
Cover any exposed crumbs with the thin frosting layer
Chill the cake until the crumb coat is firm
Apply the final layer of frosting after chilling
