Wash the bite with soap and water
Apply a cold compress for 10 to 15 minutes at a time
Keep the affected area elevated if possible
Take an over-the-counter pain reliever if needed
Use an antihistamine for itching if appropriate
Apply a topical antiseptic or antibiotic ointment if the skin is broken
Avoid scratching or squeezing the bite
Monitor for increasing redness, swelling, pain, or pus
Seek medical care if symptoms worsen or do not improve
Get urgent help if you have trouble breathing, severe swelling, chest pain, muscle cramps, fever, or a spreading rash
Seek immediate emergency care for a suspected black widow or brown recluse bite
Contact a healthcare professional if the bite is on the face, hands, genitals, or in a child, older adult, or pregnant person
