Drink small sips of water or oral rehydration solution frequently
Rest as much as possible
Stop eating solid food for a few hours if vomiting is active
Start with bland foods when you can tolerate them
Eat small amounts of toast, rice, bananas, applesauce, or crackers
Avoid alcohol, caffeine, dairy, greasy foods, and spicy foods
Wash hands often to prevent spreading the illness
Use clear fluids if you cannot keep food down
Take acetaminophen if needed for fever or pain, unless a doctor has told you not to
Avoid anti-diarrheal medicines if you have fever or bloody diarrhea unless a doctor advises them
Seek medical care if symptoms are severe, last more than a couple of days, or you cannot keep fluids down
Get urgent help if you have signs of dehydration, blood in stool or vomit, severe abdominal pain, high fever, or confusion
