Drink water or an electrolyte drink immediately
Take small sips continuously for a few hours
Eat something bland (toast, crackers, rice, bananas, oatmeal)
Take a light meal with carbs and some protein
Use an oral rehydration solution if available
Take ginger (tea or capsules) for nausea
Consider peppermint tea if you have an upset stomach
Get rest and sleep as much as possible
Take a cool shower or wash your face if you feel overheated
Avoid alcohol “hair of the dog”
Avoid more alcohol, especially “to take the edge off”
Avoid smoking and other stimulants
Use an OTC pain reliever carefully:
Prefer ibuprofen or naproxen if you can take NSAIDs
Avoid acetaminophen/paracetamol if you drank heavily or still have alcohol in your system
If you have nausea, try anti-nausea options you can safely take (follow label directions)
If you’re vomiting, keep rehydrating with small sips or oral rehydration solution
Stay in a well-ventilated, quiet place and reduce screen brightness
Seek urgent care if you have severe symptoms (confusion, repeated vomiting, fainting, trouble breathing, seizures, black/bloody vomit, severe abdominal pain, or signs of dehydration like not urinating)
