Seek urgent medical evaluation to find and treat the cause
Rest and avoid strenuous activity
Drink plenty of fluids if not restricted by a doctor
Avoid alcohol completely
Avoid acetaminophen and other liver-stressing medicines unless prescribed
Follow a bland, low-fat diet if eating causes nausea
Eat small, frequent meals if tolerated
Take only medications prescribed for the underlying cause
Treat infections, bile duct blockage, hepatitis, or other causes as directed by a doctor
Go to the emergency room if there is severe abdominal pain, confusion, fever, vomiting, bleeding, or worsening yellowing
