Use an over-the-counter antifungal cream such as terbinafine, clotrimazole, miconazole, or ketoconazole
Apply the cream exactly as directed, usually once or twice daily, to the rash and 1–2 cm beyond the edge
Continue treatment for the full recommended course, even if the rash looks better
Keep the affected area clean and dry
Wash hands after touching the rash
Change socks, underwear, and clothing daily
Use a separate towel for the affected area and wash it after each use
Avoid sharing combs, hats, towels, clothing, or sports gear
Wash bedding, towels, and clothing in hot water if possible
Keep pets checked and treated by a veterinarian if they may be the source
Avoid steroid creams unless a clinician specifically tells you to use them
See a clinician if it is on the scalp, beard, nails, face, or genitals
See a clinician if it is widespread, painful, infected, or not improving after 1–2 weeks
See a clinician sooner if you have diabetes, a weakened immune system, or frequent recurrences
