Gather dog nail clippers or a grinder, styptic powder, and a bright light
Hold the paw firmly but gently
Examine the nail from the side and look for the quickâs darker core
Trim only a tiny bit at a time
Cut straight across the tip of the nail
Stop when you see a small dark center or a grayish oval appear
Use a grinder for more control if the quick is hard to see
Take off small amounts and check often
Avoid cutting past the curved tip into the thicker part of the nail
If you hit the quick, apply styptic powder and apply gentle pressure
Trim one nail at a time and reward calm behavior
If the nails are very dark or the dog is anxious, ask a veterinarian or groomer for help
