Wash your hands and the affected foot or finger with soap and warm water
Soak the ingrown nail in warm water for 15 to 20 minutes to soften it
Dry the area completely with a clean towel
Use clean, disinfected nail clippers or nail scissors
Trim the nail straight across, not rounded at the corners
Cut only the part of the nail that is clearly visible and easy to reach
Do not dig into the skin or cut down the sides of the nail
If a corner is pressing into the skin, gently lift it after soaking and place a small piece of clean cotton or dental floss under it
Apply an antiseptic or antibiotic ointment if needed
Cover the area with a clean bandage if it is irritated
Wear roomy shoes or avoid pressure on the toe
Seek medical care if there is severe pain, swelling, pus, redness spreading, fever, or if you have diabetes or poor circulation
