Check local regulations for gasoline disposal and hazardous waste drop-off requirements
If the gasoline is still usable and properly stored, use it promptly in a vehicle or approved equipment
Store remaining gasoline in an approved, tightly sealed container labeled “Gasoline”
Keep gasoline away from heat, sparks, flames, and direct sunlight
Do not pour gasoline down drains, into sewers, on the ground, or into trash
Do not burn gasoline outdoors or in residential fire pits
Take gasoline to a household hazardous waste (HHW) facility or designated hazardous waste collection event
Contact your local HHW program for accepted container sizes and any labeling requirements
Transport gasoline in the trunk or a well-ventilated area of the vehicle, kept upright and secured
Use original containers when possible; keep containers clean and free of leaks
If the gasoline is contaminated (water, debris, unknown mixture), treat it as hazardous and take it to HHW
For small amounts, absorb with inert absorbent (kitty litter, oil-absorbent pads) and place in a sealed, labeled container for HHW
Keep absorbent containers tightly sealed and labeled “Gasoline-soaked absorbent”
Never mix gasoline with other chemicals or wastes unless the HHW facility instructs you to
If you have a large quantity or a commercial setting, contact a licensed hazardous waste hauler for pickup or drop-off guidance
