Check your local DMV or motor vehicle agency rules first
Remove or destroy any registration stickers or decals if required
Return plates to the DMV if your state requires surrender
Mail plates to the DMV if drop-off is not available
Cut, bend, or otherwise deface plates if you are instructed to destroy them
Recycle aluminum plates at a metal recycling facility if permitted
Do not throw plates in regular trash unless local rules allow it
Keep a receipt or proof of surrender if you return them
Remove plates from your vehicle before disposal
Cancel or transfer the registration before disposing of the plates
