How to Do Dreadlocks?

Start with clean, dry hair

Decide on the method: twist and rip, backcombing, crochet, or freeform

Section the hair evenly with clips or bands

Separate one section at a time

For backcombing, comb hair toward the scalp in small strokes

For twist and rip, twist the section and pull it apart slightly

For crochet, use a crochet hook to pull loose hairs into the lock

For freeform, separate sections regularly and let the hair mat naturally

Roll each section between your palms to help shape it

Secure the roots if needed with bands or clips

Repeat for all sections

Wash with residue-free shampoo

Dry thoroughly after washing

Retwist or maintain loose roots as needed

Separate any hairs that join neighboring locks

Keep the scalp clean and moisturized

Avoid heavy waxes and buildup

Maintain the locs regularly as they mature
