Choose a paddle board suited to your size and skill level
Use a paddle that is the right height for you
Wear a properly fitted life jacket
Attach a leash to your ankle or calf
Check weather, water conditions, and local rules
Place the board in shallow, calm water
Start by kneeling in the center of the board
Hold the paddle with one hand on the top grip and the other on the shaft
Stand up one foot at a time while keeping your knees bent
Keep your feet parallel and about shoulder-width apart
Look forward, not down at your feet
Paddle on one side to move straight, then switch sides as needed
Use short, smooth strokes close to the board
Brace with the paddle if you feel unsteady
Turn by paddling on one side or using a sweep stroke
Step back slightly on the board to slow down or stop
Fall away from the board if you lose balance
Reboard from the side or rear when ready
Practice in calm water before trying waves or currents
Carry the board by the handle when on land
Rinse your board and gear after use
