Use warm water only unless a clinician specifically told you to use something else
Wash your hands before and after
Use a clean, dedicated douche bulb or enema device
Sterilize or thoroughly clean the device according to the manufacturer’s instructions
Fill the bulb with lukewarm water
Add no soap, alcohol, peroxide, or harsh additives
Lubricate the tip with water-based lubricant
Gently insert the tip a short distance
Squeeze the bulb slowly and gently
Hold the water briefly if comfortable
Release the water into the toilet
Repeat only if needed and only a few times
Stop if you feel pain, bleeding, dizziness, or strong cramping
Do not use if you have rectal bleeding, hemorrhoids that are irritated, or recent surgery unless a clinician approves
Do not douche too often
Clean and dry the device after use
Seek medical advice if you have ongoing discomfort, constipation, diarrhea, or rectal symptoms
