Get proper training from a certified motorcycle safety course
Wear a DOT-approved helmet and protective gear
Check the motorcycle before riding
Sit on the motorcycle and keep both feet on the ground
Turn the ignition on and start the engine
Pull in the clutch if the bike has a manual transmission
Shift into first gear
Release the clutch slowly while gently applying throttle
Keep your balance and look ahead
Use the handlebars to steer
Roll on the throttle smoothly to accelerate
Roll off the throttle and use both brakes smoothly to slow down
Downshift as you reduce speed
Use the clutch when stopping or shifting gears
Put your left foot down when stopped
Put the bike in neutral or keep it in gear as needed
Use turn signals before turning or changing lanes
Check mirrors and blind spots before moving
Lean with the motorcycle through turns
Maintain a safe following distance
Practice braking, turning, and low-speed control in a safe area
Obey traffic laws and ride defensively
