Fill a saucepan with about 2 to 3 inches of water
Add a splash of vinegar if desired
Bring the water to a gentle simmer
Crack an egg into a small bowl or cup
Stir the water to create a gentle whirlpool if desired
Slide the egg into the water
Cook for 3 to 4 minutes for a soft yolk
Cook longer for a firmer yolk
Lift the egg out with a slotted spoon
Drain on paper towel
Season and serve
