How To Fast On Mahashivratri?

Decide the type of fast you will observe: nirjala, phalahar, or partial fast

Eat a light, sattvic meal before sunset on the previous day

Avoid onion, garlic, meat, alcohol, and processed food

Drink enough water before starting the fast if you are not doing nirjala

Wake up early on Mahashivratri and take a bath

Wear clean, simple clothes

Set your intention and begin the fast after prayer

Visit a Shiva temple if possible

Offer water, milk, bel leaves, flowers, and incense to Lord Shiva

Chant “Om Namah Shivaya” throughout the day

Read Shiva-related scriptures, stotras, or mantras

Eat only permitted fasting foods if you are doing phalahar

Use fruits, milk, curd, nuts, coconut water, and fasting flours if allowed by your practice

Avoid grains, legumes, and regular salt if following a strict fast

Keep your mind calm and avoid anger, gossip, and unnecessary distractions

Stay awake at night for jagran if you are observing the traditional vigil

Break the fast the next day after morning पूजा and a bath

Eat a light meal first when ending the fast

Avoid overeating immediately after the fast

Consult a doctor before fasting if you are pregnant, elderly, ill, or on medication
