Create an FSA ID for the student and one for a parent if required
Gather Social Security numbers, tax returns, W-2s, bank statements, and untaxed income records
Go to studentaid.gov and start the FAFSA form
Log in with the student’s FSA ID
Enter the student’s personal information
Enter the student’s citizenship and marital status information
List the schools to receive the FAFSA
Answer dependency status questions
Enter parent information if the student is dependent
Use the IRS Data Retrieval Tool if available
Enter income, asset, and tax information
Report household size and number in college
Review all answers for accuracy
Sign and submit the FAFSA with the student’s FSA ID
Have the parent sign if required
Save the confirmation page
Check email and FAFSA status for corrections or updates
Complete any additional financial aid forms requested by schools
