How To Fill Raised Garden Beds?

Measure the bed dimensions to calculate total volume

Choose a base layer if needed, such as cardboard or hardware cloth

Add a coarse bottom layer for drainage if the bed is very deep

Fill the lower section with branches, logs, or woody debris if using hugelkultur

Add partially decomposed organic matter, leaves, or composted materials

Mix in topsoil with compost for the main planting layer

Use a soil blend suited to your plants, such as garden soil, compost, and aeration material

Fill the bed to about 1 to 2 inches below the top edge

Water the soil thoroughly to help it settle

Top off with more soil if the level drops after watering

Add mulch on top to help retain moisture

Replenish compost and soil each season as the bed settles and nutrients deplete
