How to Find Retained Earnings on Balance Sheet?

Look under the shareholders’ equity section of the balance sheet

Find the line item labeled “Retained Earnings”

If it is not listed separately, check for “Accumulated Earnings” or “Accumulated Deficit”

Use the ending balance shown for the reporting period

If needed, calculate it as beginning retained earnings plus net income minus dividends

For a corporation, it is usually listed after common stock and additional paid-in capital

For a sole proprietorship or partnership, it may appear as owner’s equity or partners’ capital instead
