Rest the knee and avoid activities that worsen pain
Apply ice for 15 to 20 minutes at a time several times a day
Use compression with an elastic bandage or knee sleeve
Elevate the leg when possible to reduce swelling
Take over-the-counter pain relievers if safe for you
Do gentle range-of-motion exercises as tolerated
Strengthen the quadriceps, hamstrings, and hip muscles with physical therapy
Avoid twisting, pivoting, deep squats, and high-impact exercise
Use crutches if walking is painful or unstable
Wear supportive footwear and consider a brace if recommended
See a doctor for an exam and imaging if symptoms persist
Follow a supervised rehabilitation plan
Consider corticosteroid injection if advised by a clinician
Consider arthroscopic surgery for severe, locked, or nonhealing tears
Seek urgent care if the knee is locked, very swollen, unstable, or you cannot bear weight
