How To Fix A Waste Disposal Unit?

Turn off the power at the wall switch and circuit breaker

Check for a tripped reset button on the bottom of the unit

Press the reset button firmly

Verify the unit is not jammed

Insert an Allen wrench into the bottom hex socket and turn it back and forth to free the impeller

Use tongs or pliers to remove visible debris from the opening

Never use your hand inside the disposal

Check under the sink for leaks or loose connections

Tighten any loose mounting or drain connections

Inspect the power cord and plug for damage

Confirm the wall switch and breaker are on

Test the disposal with cold water running

If the motor hums but does not spin, clear the jam again and reset it

If the unit does not power on, check the outlet or GFCI

Replace a worn or damaged disposal if it still will not run

Call a licensed plumber or electrician if the problem persists
