Turn off power to the disposal at the switch and breaker
Check for a tripped reset button on the bottom of the unit
Press the reset button if it has popped out
Use an Allen wrench in the bottom hex socket to free a jammed motor
Remove visible debris from the sink opening with tongs or pliers
Never put your hand inside the disposal
Check the drain for clogs and clear the P-trap if needed
Run cold water before, during, and after using the disposal
Turn the power back on and test the unit
If the disposal hums but does not spin, clear the jam again
If the disposal leaks, tighten connections or replace damaged seals
If the disposal still does not work, replace the unit or call a plumber
