Turn off power to the disposal at the switch and breaker
Check for a tripped reset button on the bottom of the unit
Use an Allen wrench in the bottom hex socket to free a jammed impeller
Remove visible debris with pliers or tongs, not your hands
Run cold water and test the disposal after clearing the jam
Press the reset button again if it trips immediately
Check the circuit breaker and replace any blown fuse
Inspect the sink flange, mounting ring, and drain connections for leaks
Tighten loose mounting bolts and plumbing connections
Replace a worn splash guard if water backs up or leaks
Clean the disposal with ice and coarse salt if it smells bad
Flush with cold water and a small amount of dish soap
Replace the disposal if the motor hums but will not spin after clearing jams
Replace the disposal if it does not power on after reset and breaker checks
Call a licensed plumber or electrician if wiring or plumbing repairs are needed
