How To Fix Disposal?

Turn off power to the disposal at the switch and breaker

Check for a tripped reset button on the bottom of the unit

Use an Allen wrench in the bottom hex socket to free a jammed impeller

Remove visible debris with pliers or tongs, not your hands

Run cold water and test the disposal after clearing the jam

Press the reset button again if it trips immediately

Check the circuit breaker and replace any blown fuse

Inspect the sink flange, mounting ring, and drain connections for leaks

Tighten loose mounting bolts and plumbing connections

Replace a worn splash guard if water backs up or leaks

Clean the disposal with ice and coarse salt if it smells bad

Flush with cold water and a small amount of dish soap

Replace the disposal if the motor hums but will not spin after clearing jams

Replace the disposal if it does not power on after reset and breaker checks

Call a licensed plumber or electrician if wiring or plumbing repairs are needed
