How to Flush a Nephrostomy Tube?

Wash your hands thoroughly

Gather sterile saline, a sterile syringe, alcohol wipes, and clean gloves if instructed

Check the tube and dressing for kinks, leaks, or dislodgement

Clamp the tube if your healthcare provider instructed you to do so

Clean the access port with an alcohol wipe and let it dry

Attach the sterile syringe filled with the prescribed saline

Gently flush the tube with the amount ordered by your healthcare provider

Stop immediately if you feel pain, resistance, or pressure

Do not force the flush

Disconnect the syringe and recap the port if instructed

Unclamp the tube if it was clamped

Check that urine drains properly after flushing

Secure the tube and dressing

Wash your hands again

Contact your healthcare provider right away if there is no drainage, leakage, bleeding, fever, severe pain, or the tube comes out
