Complete Form DS-11 for a first-time passport, a child under 16, or if your previous passport was lost, stolen, or expired more than 5 years ago
Gather proof of U.S. citizenship, such as a certified birth certificate, naturalization certificate, or previous U.S. passport
Gather a valid government-issued photo ID, such as a driver’s license or state ID
Bring a photocopy of the front and back of your ID
Get a passport photo that meets U.S. passport requirements
Find a passport acceptance facility, such as a post office, clerk of court, or library
Make an appointment if required by the acceptance facility
Bring your completed application, citizenship proof, ID, photocopies, and passport photo to the appointment
Pay the required passport fees
If applying for a child under 16, both parents or guardians usually must appear with the child
If one parent cannot appear, provide the required notarized consent or custody documents
Submit the application in person
Track your application status online after submission
Wait for processing and receive your passport by mail
Request expedited service if you need the passport faster
Apply for a passport card if you also want a wallet-sized travel document for certain destinations
