Sit quietly and rest for 5–10 minutes
Take slow, deep breaths
Loosen tight clothing
Avoid caffeine, nicotine, alcohol, and exercise
Drink a glass of water if you may be dehydrated
Empty your bladder
Recheck your blood pressure after resting
Take prescribed blood pressure medicine exactly as directed
If you missed a dose, take it only if your doctor has told you to do so
Call emergency services now if blood pressure is 180/120 or higher and you have chest pain, shortness of breath, severe headache, weakness, confusion, vision changes, or trouble speaking
Seek urgent medical care if blood pressure stays very high or you feel unwell
