Drink plenty of fluids
Rest as much as possible
Use honey for adults and children over 1 year old
Try warm tea or warm water with lemon
Use a humidifier or inhale steam
Avoid smoke, dust, and strong odors
Use throat lozenges or hard candy if appropriate
Gargle with warm salt water
Sleep with your head elevated
Take over-the-counter cough medicine as directed
Use saline nasal spray if postnasal drip is causing the cough
See a doctor if the cough lasts more than 3 weeks
Seek medical help if you have trouble breathing, chest pain, high fever, coughing blood, or wheezing
