Apply a warm, moist compress to the area for 10–15 minutes, 3–4 times a day
Keep the area clean and dry
Wash your hands before and after touching the boil
Do not squeeze, pop, or pick at it
Wear loose, breathable clothing to reduce friction
Use an over-the-counter antiseptic wash if tolerated
Cover it with a clean, dry bandage if it rubs against clothing
Avoid shaving the area until it heals
Take over-the-counter pain relief if needed and safe for you
Seek medical care if it is very large, very painful, spreading, draining a lot, or not improving within a few days
Seek urgent care if you have fever, red streaks, worsening redness, or repeated boils
