Apply a cold pack wrapped in cloth for 10 to 20 minutes at a time during the first 24 to 48 hours
Rest and avoid using the injured area too much
Elevate the bruised area above heart level when possible
Use a light compression bandage if swelling is present
After 48 hours, use warm compresses for 10 to 20 minutes at a time
Take acetaminophen for pain if needed
Avoid aspirin and ibuprofen in the first 24 hours if possible
Protect the bruise from further injury
Eat foods rich in vitamin C and vitamin K
Stay hydrated
Seek medical care if bruising is severe, frequent, unexplained, or not improving
