Use a cold compress on the sore for 5–10 minutes at a time
Keep the area clean and dry
Apply an over-the-counter antiviral cream at the first sign of tingling
Use petroleum jelly or lip balm to prevent cracking
Take over-the-counter pain relievers if needed
Avoid touching, picking, or squeezing the sore
Wash your hands after touching your face
Avoid kissing and sharing cups, utensils, towels, or lip products
Avoid acidic, salty, or spicy foods if the sore is on your lips
Get enough rest and stay hydrated
Use sunscreen on your lips and face to help prevent future outbreaks
See a doctor if sores are severe, frequent, last more than 2 weeks, or spread to the eyes
