Rest and stay home until fever is gone and blisters have dried
Drink plenty of fluids
Eat soft, cool foods if mouth sores hurt
Use acetaminophen or ibuprofen for pain or fever if appropriate
Avoid aspirin in children
Wash hands often with soap and water
Clean and disinfect shared surfaces and toys
Avoid close contact with others while contagious
Keep blisters clean and dry
Do not pop blisters
Use saltwater rinses for mouth discomfort if needed
Seek medical care if dehydration, trouble breathing, severe pain, or symptoms worsen
See a doctor if symptoms last more than 10 days or if the patient is very young, pregnant, or immunocompromised
