Rest and stay home until fever is gone and mouth sores are improving
Drink plenty of fluids to prevent dehydration
Eat soft, bland foods if mouth sores make swallowing painful
Use over-the-counter pain relievers like acetaminophen or ibuprofen as directed
Avoid aspirin in children and teens
Use cold drinks, popsicles, or ice chips to soothe mouth pain
Wash hands often with soap and water
Disinfect commonly touched surfaces and shared items
Avoid close contact with others while symptoms are active
Keep fingernails short and clean to reduce skin irritation
Do not pop blisters
Seek medical care if dehydration, severe pain, high fever, trouble breathing, or worsening symptoms occur
Contact a doctor if the person is very young, pregnant, immunocompromised, or symptoms are unusual or severe
