Contact your obstetrician, midwife, or maternal-fetal medicine specialist right away
Take only antiviral medicines prescribed by your clinician
Ask about acyclovir or valacyclovir if you are not already on treatment
Start treatment as early as possible when symptoms begin
Keep the area clean and dry
Wear loose, breathable cotton underwear
Avoid touching the sores
Wash your hands after any contact with the affected area
Use a separate towel for the affected area
Avoid sexual contact during the outbreak
Avoid oral, vaginal, and anal sex until fully healed and your clinician says it is safe
Do not use over-the-counter creams or home remedies without asking your clinician
Use acetaminophen only if your clinician says it is safe for you
Drink plenty of fluids
Rest as much as possible
Call your clinician urgently if you have fever, trouble urinating, severe pain, or spreading sores
Tell your clinician immediately if this is your first herpes outbreak during pregnancy
Ask your clinician about delivery planning if outbreaks occur near your due date
