Rest the ankle and avoid putting weight on it
Elevate the ankle above heart level
Apply ice for 15–20 minutes every 2–3 hours
Use a compression wrap or ankle brace
Keep the wrap snug, not tight
Take an over-the-counter anti-inflammatory if safe for you
Avoid heat, alcohol, and long periods of standing
Gently move the ankle if pain allows
Wear supportive shoes
Seek medical care if swelling is severe, sudden, painful, red, warm, or after an injury
Seek urgent care if you cannot bear weight, have numbness, or shortness of breath
