Rinse your mouth with warm salt water before bed

Floss carefully to remove trapped food
Use alcohol-free mouthwash
Suck on ice chips or sip cold water
Avoid smoking and alcohol
Take an over-the-counter pain reliever if safe for you
Apply a cold compress to the outside of your mouth if needed
Avoid biting or irritating the tongue
Sleep with your head slightly elevated
Seek urgent care if swelling is severe, lasts more than a few days, or affects breathing or swallowing
