Wear gloves
Use a fine-tipped tick remover or tweezers
Part the fur to expose the tick
Grasp the tick as close to the skin as possible
Pull straight out with steady, even pressure
Do not twist, crush, or jerk the tick
Check that the tick’s mouthparts are removed
Place the tick in rubbing alcohol or seal it in a bag
Clean the bite area with antiseptic or soap and water
Wash your hands and the tools used
Monitor the cat for redness, swelling, or illness
Contact a veterinarian if the tick is deeply embedded, the cat seems unwell, or you are unsure how to remove it
Use cat-safe tick prevention products recommended by a veterinarian
Do not use dog tick treatments on cats
Do not use petroleum jelly, alcohol, heat, or matches to remove ticks
