Follow your veterinarian’s instructions exactly
Check the tablet size and whether it can be split or crushed
Hide the tablet in a small amount of soft food or a pill pocket
Offer a few plain bites first, then the medicated bite
Make sure the dog swallows the tablet completely
Give a small amount of water after the tablet if needed
Use a pill dispenser or pill popper if your dog refuses food
Open the dog’s mouth gently and place the tablet far back on the tongue
Close the mouth and hold it shut briefly until swallowing occurs
Rub the throat or blow lightly on the nose to encourage swallowing
Check the mouth afterward to ensure the tablet was not spit out
Reward the dog with praise or a treat after dosing
Ask your veterinarian before crushing, splitting, or mixing any tablet
Contact your veterinarian if the dog vomits, spits out the tablet, or misses a dose
