Wash the ginger root and pat it dry
Peel the skin if desired using a spoon or peeler
Hold the ginger firmly on a cutting board
Use a fine grater, microplane, or box grater
Rub the ginger against the grater in short strokes
Stop when you reach the fibrous core if it becomes hard to grate
Scrape the grated ginger from the back of the grater
Use immediately or store as needed
