Choose a sunny location with at least 6 to 8 hours of direct sunlight daily
Plant in well-draining soil
Space the tree away from buildings and other plants
Dig a hole twice as wide as the root ball and the same depth
Place the tree at the same soil level it was growing in the container
Backfill with soil and water thoroughly
Mulch around the base without touching the trunk
Water regularly during the first year
Water deeply when the top few inches of soil dry out
Fertilize lightly in spring if needed
Prune in late winter or early spring to shape the tree
Protect young trees from frost in cold climates
Grow in a large container if space is limited
Repot container-grown fig trees as they outgrow their pots
Harvest figs when they soften and droop slightly
Watch for pests and diseases and treat promptly
